For nature lovers and adventure seekers, the Palo María Waterfall offers a refreshing escape just 5 minutes from Casa Xula. Tucked into the lush jungle just south of Puerto Vallarta, this lesser-known hike leads to a beautiful waterfall and natural swimming hole – perfect for cooling off in the middle of the forest.
Why Go
This hike is short, wild, and rewarding. You’ll cross rivers, climb over boulders, and trek beneath thick jungle canopy before reaching a crystal-clear waterfall cascading into a shallow pool. It’s not overcrowded and feels like a secret spot, even though it’s so close to town.
What to Expect
The Hike
The trailhead begins just off the main highway past Conchas Chinas, near a small roadside bridge. The path is unmarked but generally easy to follow. You’ll cross a shallow river multiple times, so wear shoes that can get wet and have good grip.
The Waterfall
The first main waterfall is about a 20–30 minute hike in, depending on your pace and conditions. Some hikers venture farther to reach additional falls, but the first is the most accessible, and still incredibly beautiful. The cool mountain water and shaded setting make it an ideal place to relax or take a dip.
Travel Tips
Best Time to Go: Early morning or late afternoon, especially during the dry season (November to May) when the trail is easier to navigate.
What to Bring: Water shoes or hiking sandals, swimsuit, towel, bug spray, water, and snacks. A waterproof bag is helpful if you’re bringing a phone or camera.
Getting There: Just a 5-minute taxi or Uber ride from Casa Xula. Ask to be dropped off at “Puente Palo María” (Palo María Bridge). From there, look for a small dirt path that leads into the jungle on the left side of the road.
Is It Kid-Friendly?
This hike is suitable for all ages, though be aware that there are some boulders and water crossings that may require assistance with younger children. If you’re hiking with little ones, be prepared for a bit of scrambling, but it’s a great adventure for the whole family. The waterfall at the end is a perfect spot to relax and let kids enjoy the cool water.
Local Insight
While the trail isn’t officially maintained, it’s well-loved by locals and visitors in the know. Be prepared to get a little muddy and embrace the adventure. This isn’t a manicured trail, and that’s part of what makes it special. After your hike, reward yourself with lunch or a cold drink back in town, you’ve earned it.
